How many of us would love to be able spending more time doing things we enjoy? For most of us though our time is taken up with the necessities of life the main one usually being our need to work. How about then if we could start to make some extra income from our hobbies?

What about if you could turn it from a little bit of extra cash or “side hustle” to actually replacing your full time income. Is that something that’s really possible? Well the answer is anything possible if you really put your mind to it. Of course there are some of caveats along the way.

So let’s have a look at different ways of how to make money from hobbies. Things you need to consider and let’s see if it’s possible to make some extra money from your hobby or even get to the stage where you can say goodbye to the 9-5 and make your hobby your full time business.

What Is My Hobby?

Sound like a silly question? Well maybe not. I’m sure many of you have something that you are super passionate about and that as soon as you have any spare time you jump in and enjoy it whatever it may be. But that’s not always the case.

There are also many of us who have a range of hobbies and these could be really diverse so which one do you choose to try and make money from? Well you could go online and search “which hobbies make the most money” but for me that’s the wrong approach.

What you should be asking and what I truly believe is most important is which one of these do I enjoy the most, what am I most passionate about?

Find Your Passion

So why do I say find you passion? Well if you are going to turn your hobby in to a lucrative side gig or maybe even eventually a full time income to replace your 9-5 than you have to be passionate about it. Because whatever approach you decide on to try and monetise your hobby it will likely take time.

To start with you probably won’t be earning money. Things could go wrong, you may well be tired and busy with the life’s other essentials but if you are passionate enough about your hobby your passion will always see you through.

There is one other thing to consider though before you look at ways at monetising your hobby and that is to be honest about the skills you have.

What skills do I have?

So why do I say this? Well it maybe that your passion is painting but you can’t paint, or singing and you can’t sing. Maybe you love cycling but still have stabilisers on your bike… I think you get my point.

Although you don’t have to be the best at whatever it is you choose to do there will of course be certain levels required particularly if you want to end up offering a “tangible” product.

So there is no point trying to start a cake shop if you can’t bake or offering a gardening service if you can’t tell weeds from flowers. So if you have a range of hobbies but are not sure how to choose what should you consider?

How To Choose Which Hobby?

So as we have said be honest with yourself about what you really enjoy. Then narrow it down to what skills you have. No matter how small or crazy it may seems put it on a list. If you are struggling to come up with a list ask yourself what you really enjoy doing in your spare time.

Think about all of those things that you do when you don’t have to work and you will be sure to find ideas for your list. And ask people what you are good at. If people always compliment your food, or the crafts that you make, or ask you for advice on certain topics then add them to your list.

If your friends and colleagues value this then it is likely that other people will to. Once you have made a list it’s time to narrow it down and ask yourself the more difficult questions. What is there a demand for and how can I make money?

This could take time to research but it is important to stay focused on a hobby you are passionate about. There are so many diverse ways of making money form hobbies because of course there are thousands of different hobbies we could choose from. Let’s explore a few.

What’s My Product?

The great news is that we live in an age where it is so much easier to publicise and offer your service whatever it may be. From physical products to online services letting people know about what you do couldn’t be easier.

With thousands of potential hobbies and “niches” I am not going to go through them all here particularly as you will know your hobby much better than me. However there are certain things you need to consider before getting started.

I have friends who have turned their hobbies in to both side hustles and full time incomes some very successfully. Some of these are online services and many aren’t. I have a very good friend who now has a furniture restoration business.

He took a French polishing course and loved restoring antique furniture. He started to buy his own furniture at auction and sell at markets and on eBay. He had to consider how much money he needed for stock, what tools he required and how much workshop and storage space.

Another friend makes art from pieces of driftwood and she now does this full time selling both in local markets and on the online platform Etsy. Etsy is a great platform for artists or anyone making unique and hand crafted products. You can see how it works in the video below.

What is important is to understand what you need to get started in terms of time, money and resources. There really are so many ways to monetise and many of them actually require virtually no upfront costs.

In fact I have written quite a few articles about work from home opportunities like 7 legit work from home opportunities and 10 ways to make money for stay at home moms.

But it really doesn’t matter what your hobby is because there is always a way to monetise it. And one of the easiest ways to do this is with your own “niche’ website.

Make Money From Your Hobby Online

As we have said the list of potential hobbies is huge and probably runs in to tens of thousands if not more. The amazing thing is there is a way you can monetise virtually all of them from anywhere in the world with very little upfront cost and that is via your own “niche” website or blogsite. So let’s take a look at them both.

Blogging And Niche Websites

For me blogging is absolutely my favourite way of monetising your hobby. You can start a blog on literally any topic you choose. The beauty of blogging is you get to spend time writing about your hobby, learning more about it and interacting with like-minded and interested people.

Running a blog really is a great way to spend more time on your hobby. Its not only fun and educational but coming back to the point of this post can earn you money.

There are various way of earning money from your blog the most popular is probably via affiliate links where you promote other people’s products as an affiliate and get paid a commission.

But there are also numerous other ways such as display adverts, sponsored content, selling your own products and offering services. And niche websites? Well in essence it is the same as a blogsite. They tend to be more focused on specific topics and make recommendations by writing reviews or best of products.

For example best mountain bike under $500 or best blender under $200. Again commission is earnt via affiliate links but you still have the option to earn with the other channels just as with a blogsite.

It is a case of building your website, writing about your hobby, telling people what you like and don’t like, pointing them in the direction of products you recommend and earning a commission. It really is that simple.

Ok I hear you say but I have no idea how to get started. How do I build a website, how do I review products, how do I get people to find my site? I know there can be loads of questions which again is why I recommend Wealthy Affiliate to anyone who wants to get started.

It is really important to set things up properly. Your website will ultimately be where your traffic (visitors and thus clients) will come from. A well-built website will not only help you gain trust with readers but will ensure that you are liked by search engines and that things function correctly.

Getting Started – 10 Simple Steps

There are 10 simple steps that you will need to go through to get your site up and running. I have covered them in more detail in the article blogging for beginners but lets just have a recap.

If you choose to build your own site then I recommend that you do as much research a possible before starting. Make sure that you use a good hosting company and choose a good theme. Learn all about keywords how to build your site correctly and how to choose the best affiliate partners.

As I said before though I do thoroughly recommend trying Wealthy Affiliate. The beauty is that you can try them absolutely for free. You get 2 free websites and the first 10 levels of training and absolutely no payment details are required.

How To Make Money From Hobbies – There’s Lots Of Options

The fact is there are literally thousands of ways to make money from hobbies and certainly far too many to talk about here. What is super important is to try and pick something that you really enjoy that way you are much less likely to lose your passion if things don’t go as you had hoped.

Because whatever approach you take things can take time to build. What you don’t see behind every successful person who turned their hobby in to a fulfilling full time job is the time, effort and persistence that it has often taken.

I chose to focus here on using blogging and affiliate marketing to monetise your hobby because you really can do it for virtually any topic. In fact I have a small blog that I started with my partner 6 months ago about our vegan lifestyle.

We post just one or two articles a week. We haven’t even really tried to monetise it with just a few links to a couple of products. In just six months it already brings us in about $25 per day. Not much you might say but that’s $750 per month without really trying.

However it maybe that an online option is not for you. Maybe you really want to be out there with real products in the real world. Whatever you choose I urge you to understand that it’s a journey and not an overnight transformation. But with perseverance a little hard work and a topic that you are passionate about you really can turn that hobby in to a career.
