Working from home and avoiding the daily commute, it’s what many people strive for especially if you are able to work for yourself. You get more time with you family, less stress commuting and let’s face it it’s much better for the environment.
Imagine then how fortunate we are to all be connected via the internet, after all it was only a mere 25 years ago that we didn’t have such opportunities and working from home was reserved for the likes of authors and artists.
The good news is that we are easily connected and that brings with it so much more flexibility. But if you aren’t lucky enough to work for a company that allows home working what options do you have to work from home for yourself?
Well unfortunately along with opportunity the internet brings with it a lot of scams. So today we are going to look at legitimate work from home opportunities that you can start and most with no start up fees.
Like anything the key is to match your specific skill set to the appropriate job. All you need is access to the internet and of course the desire to succeed. OK let’s jump in and see what we can find.
1. TEFL And ESL Online Teaching
Ok so I have started with this as it is something I have experience with. What is TEFL or ESL teaching? Well TEFL stands for Teaching English As A Foreign Language and ESL stands for English As A Second Language.
In certain cases, you can connect one to one with students looking to improve their English and the only requirement is that you are a Native English Speaker. However these one on one opportunities can be more difficult to find and will almost always pay less than the official sites looking for tutors.
There is a growing demand for teaching English to Children in the Far East, particularly China. For this you need no teaching experience although it would certainly help. You will have to take an online interview where you submit a “sample” class. If you pass you will be subject to some background checks and that is it.
If you are good with kids this can be really fun and pays quite well. The two sites I have experience of are VIP Kids and Magic Ears. They do tend to prefer slightly younger teachers and prefer those with an American accent but applications are open for all. And the earning potential. Well it will vary depending on your experience and the client but between $10 -$45 per hour.
2. Become A Freelancer
So, what skills can you freelance, well the answer is almost anything. Think you don’t have any skills? Well just by reading this article in English means you have a certain skill. You see it could be that you are good at writing or proof reading. In fact if you head on over to one of the freelance sites you will see that people earn money offering a huge range of freelance services.
Just to give you an idea services include, article writing, proof reading, logo design, infographic design, bookkeeping, web design being a virtual assistant and hundreds more. To get some ideas and see if you can match any of your skills to the many services offered and requested I suggest you head over to one of the sites I use and have a look. They are fiverr.com, upwork.com, and freelancer.com.
You choose whether to charge per hour or per project and as your feedback ratings improve you can start to increase your rates. If you produce quality work then very quickly you can build up a regular client list.
In fact, thousands of people work full-time as professional freelancers using these platforms. And the earning potential. Well it will vary depending on the service offered and client you have but anything between $5 -$100 perhour.
If you click on the link you will see an infographic that I had produced on fivver about vegan sources of iron. Maybe you could have produced this for me!
3. Testing Websites
Ahh but I hear you say but I don’t know anything about testing websites. Well that doesn’t matter because the whole idea behind website testing is to understand the user experience and guess what you are the user!
Website developers always want to ensure that users have the best possible experience and to do so they use companies like usertesting.com. This enables them to be able to test a diverse range of users within different age groups, backgrounds, languages and of course many using different hardware.
So how does it work? Well once signed up you have to complete a quick questionnaire. You are then invited to make a video of yourself completing a set of pre-allocated tasks on the site whilst recording your feedback. It’s completely free to sign up and you can earn up to $60 for a single test although the average pay is around $10 in return for a 15 -20 minutes’ test.
As we become a truly global society the demand for translators increases. There are various ways that you can work as a translator from home. You can work as an interpreter who translates live over the phone or skype for businesses and organizations.
You can translate written work from one language to another. There is even work available for things like subtitling movies or transcribing audio recordings. You can expect to have to take a test to prove that you are fluent in the relevant language but if you are lucky enough to be at least bi-lingual then there really is a lot of work available.
There are specialist agencies that deal with translation services like gengo.com where you are able to search for appropriate projects. You will also find a range of translation jobs posted daily on translatorscafe.com And the earning potential. Well again it will depend on the project and client you have but anything between $10 -$40 per hour.
5. Sell Your Crafts With Etsy
Are you crafty, do you have a hobby that involves making or creating something unique? It really doesn’t matter what as long as it is original and handcrafted then you can use the platform Etsy to sell it.
There are already 1000’s of people who are making a good living selling their handmade crafts to a global customer base. To give you an idea some of the items include paintings, artworks, sculpting, glass work, metalwork.
Even knitting, woodworking greetings cards and the list goes on. With Etsy you have the opportunity to start an online store and turn your craft into a full-time income. There really are hundreds of different products you could potentially sell the only criteria that it has to be handcrafted, vintage, custom or unique!
6. Run A Childcare Company From Your Home
Ok so this may seem a little left field and to be honest there would be a set up cost but I include it because it is exactly what a good friend of mine has recently done. A stay at home mum she was looking at ways to work from home. So I asked her what she had to do and how it works.
Well the first thing she told me was that it’s not something to consider if you don’t like or aren’t good with children. However if you love kids and are already at home then read on. Depending on where you are in the world the rules will vary but you will have to apply to become a licensed family child care provider and complete some basic training.
You will also be required to undertake certain personal checks like criminal records. The training will include things like how to keep children safe as well as a first aid course You will also require a home safety check which will assess things like the access and fire risk. All of this of course has a cost and it will vary depending on where you are in the world.
But once you are set up the overheads are minimal. It is important to consider your hours of operation, what age group of children and what services you will offer. Remember many professionals require this service and finding someone they trust to care for their kids while they work can be hard. So what can you earn? Well the rates vary but on average around $200 per week per child.
And last but not least blogging. I have left blogging till last for a reason and that’s because it’s something I’m passionate about. I’m not talking about freelancing with fivver or upwork but actually writing your own blog and earning money from it. So how can you do that? Well you can read my article start blogging for beginners for more details, but really its a pretty simple process.
First you will need to choose a topic, ideally something you are passionate about because you are going to need to write about it. Then you will need to buy a domain and build your site. Then it’s all about writing interesting, helpful content that people want to read and once you do that the rest is easy.
The 4 basic steps to earning an income blogging
The great news is there are courses like the Online Entrepreneur Training Course at Wealthy Affiliate that teach people how to become professional full-time bloggers and they even give you two websites and get you started for free.
Tens of thousands of people make a living from home by writing about the things they love from fashion and fitness to fishing and flying. The wonderful thing about blogging is that you really can chose anything that your passionate about.
So why don’t more people do it? Well I think its 2-fold. Many people just don’t know where to start and also, they are impatient. You see blogging takes time to develop. Usually around 3 months before you start seeing any income and between 6-12 months before you start generating a substantial income. The beauty is though once your blog is up and running it even earns you money while you are sleeping.
